Data sources and diet labels

NYC health inspection grades
For places in New York City, the health inspection grade and inspection date come from NYC Open Data: restaurant inspection results (published by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, DOHMH). Places outside New York City do not show a grade.
How diet labels are set
OpenStreetMap contributors note whether a place serves only vegan food, only vegetarian food, or has vegan dishes on its menu. We turn these notes into three labels: “100% vegan” means the whole place serves only vegan food; “Vegetarian” means no meat or fish, though dairy or eggs may be used; “Vegan options” means the menu has vegan dishes. For a few places the label follows what the restaurant itself publishes. Ordinary branches of large chains are not listed. A label is not a certification.
How often the data is updated
We refresh the listings from these sources regularly. Every place page shows the date its data was last updated; the most recent update in the current data is 2026-10-28. The open-status line is calculated from the listed hours and does not confirm that a place is open right now.
Confirm before you go
Hours and menus change. Confirm the hours and diet type with the restaurant before you go, especially if you have allergies or strict needs.
